Just found this on my computer. It’s part of a larger design I was helping a friend with that ended up going nowhere. I find it pretty mind numbing (especially the larger illustration), but thought it would be fun to share with those of you that like this style of illustration.
I am endlessly floored by the amount of talent my friends possess be it in music, design, photography, illustration, writing, anything.
This set of cast studies is by my friend Josh Godin. He is one of my older friends (even though our friendship has only been online. We go back as far back as the late ’90s. We met in the Smashing Pumpkins AOL chatroom, hah!)
His description of these drawings:
These are plaster cast studies done in graphite on bristol paper. The goal is to eliminate variables (by blocking off all but one single light source) and study the precise effects of light on conveying a sense of form.
I remember when we were young and fairly clueless many years ago. It’s great to see how he has progressed over the years. He definitely had natural talent but since he got accepted into the ConceptArt.Org Atelier his skill has flourished leaps and bounds and I am really proud of him.
Make sure to keep track of his work at Concept 1027 and his blog at Sour.org
I was asked to do an illustration based on my childhood ambitions.
I’ll be shameless about it: I LOVED SAILORMOON. well to this day I have time to time nostalgia about it.
But it got me thinking. How did Sailormoon effect how I see myself? Blonde and blue eyed girl who is supposed to be beautiful. As I was growing up, thats what I believed ‘beautiful’ people looked like. Many oriental Asians get plastic surgery to look like one. As I was doing my research, I read about a girl named Xiaoqing, whos ex-bf made her wear a wig and put on make up like Jessica Alba (because he had a crazy obsession over the celebrity). Once she refused to do so, he broke up with her.
Heartbroken, she wrote on line asking for plastic surgery to look like Ms. Alba. Because of her publicity, she got her surgeries to look like the celebrity.
So yeah, this illustration is about our obsession with what is considered beautiful. And I want to connect with people who are doing bloody things to get there.
I think that this particular distorted view of beauty is with most people that aren’t white or light skinned.
When I was little I wanted to be She-Ra and would run around my house with a towel for a cape and wishing my long brown hair was blonde. I played with Barbies, Cabbage Patch dolls, and my prized Jem doll. They were all fair skinned and had blonde hair. Even the Barbie doll my grandmother bought me in India was just a blonde in a sari.
Thankfully I have never gotten to the point of wanting to drastically change my appearance, although there was a point where I wanted to disassociate with my culture (which I am completely over now), but I’ve seen that happen with many other people and it’s sad. Luckily things are changing and hopefully our children will grow up having roll models of all flavors, not just vanilla.

Soooo… It turns out that a project we (FYHK8082) worked on has finally made it out into the world!
I’ve had this art displayed on my portfolio site for some time now with nothing more to show, but it seems the folks at Hometeam-Music + DJ Ideal have finally released the mixtape which is available for download at the Hometeam site here. It’s actually really good, so you should go ahead and do that. Artwork is included.
We originally did this in mid 2008 for a double mixtape that they were planning to release with Andre and Yelawolf so there is art for Yela that we haven’t put online yet, BUT I’m putting it up now. Why not, right?
You can click on each image to view larger in a new window.
Enjoy!
